Figures from the Instagram Help Center, checked on 2 November 2026.
Instagram uploads photos at up to 1080 pixels wide and keeps your resolution when the aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, which at 1080 pixels wide means a height from 566 to 1440 pixels. A photo with any other ratio is cropped to a supported one.

What Instagram publishes
These are the figures in the Instagram Help Center article on the resolution of photos you share.
| Maximum width | 1080 pixels. A higher resolution photo is sized down to a width of 1080 pixels. |
|---|---|
| Supported aspect ratio | 1.91:1 to 3:4, which is 1080 pixels wide with a height between 566 and 1440 pixels |
| Between 320 and 1080 pixels wide | Kept at its original resolution when the aspect ratio is supported |
| Narrower than 320 pixels | Enlarged to a width of 320 pixels |
| Unsupported aspect ratio | Cropped to fit a supported ratio |
| To share at 1080 pixels wide | Upload a photo at least 1080 pixels wide with an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4 |
| File size and format | Not stated in this article |
The Help Center states the two limits, 1.91:1 (1080 x 566) and 3:4 (1080 x 1440). The square 1:1 and portrait 4:5 presets are our arithmetic: both sit inside that range.
Good to know
- Instagram sizes photos wider than 1080 pixels down to 1080 pixels wide, so uploading a larger width does not give a larger post.
- Width is fixed by the cap, height is what changes: at 1080 pixels wide, the supported heights run from 566 pixels (1.91:1) to 1440 pixels (3:4).
- Stories have their own format, see the Instagram story page of this family.

Instagram post size FAQ
What is the best size for an Instagram post?
Upload a photo at least 1080 pixels wide with an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4. At 1080 pixels wide that is a height between 566 and 1440 pixels. Square (1080 x 1080) and 4:5 portrait (1080 x 1350) are inside this range.
What happens if my photo does not fit the ratio?
If the aspect ratio of your photo is not supported, Instagram crops it to fit a supported ratio. Use the tool to choose the crop yourself before you upload.
What is the tallest Instagram post?
According to the Help Center, the tallest supported ratio is 3:4, which is 1440 pixels tall at 1080 pixels wide.
Is 4:5 still supported?
4:5 (1080 x 1350) is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, so it is inside the range the Help Center publishes. The tallest ratio it lists is 3:4.
What happens to photos wider than 1080 pixels?
They are sized down to a width of 1080 pixels. Photos between 320 and 1080 pixels wide keep their resolution if the ratio is supported, and photos narrower than 320 pixels are enlarged to 320.
Does this resizer upload my photo?
No. Your browser reads and resizes the photo, and nothing is sent to Cascads or to any other server.
